Suvilahti energy self-sufficient residential area

In the Suvilahti 2008 housing fair area you can experience how around 40 houses receive heating and cooling from a unique low energy network installed in the sea sediment, and how biogas is collected from a closed landfill site and converted to heat and power by a micro turbine. Around 7,8 km of coaxial pipes are horizontally installed in the sea sediment. Sediment heat is a renewable energy source when the sun reheats the sediments in summer. The area is fully energy self-sufficient using the sediment heat, ground source heating and landfill gas.
